Kristin Chenoweth to Star in ABC Put Pilot ‘The Real Fairy Godmother’

Kristin Chenoweth has signed on to star in and produce the ABC put pilot “The Real Fairy Godmother,” Variety has learned.

Chenoweth would star as a self-absorbed “real housewife”who learns that she’s descended from a secret order of Fairy Godmothers and has an inescapable destiny to use her magical abilities to help those in need. As she begrudgingly executes her assigned weekly missions, she slowly begins to realize just how superficial and morally bankrupt her actual life is and, to the confusion of her dysfunctional family and friends, tries to get them all to be better people.

Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, who wrote all the songs for the “Once Upon a Time” musical episode, will write and co-executive produce. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will executive produce through Zadan/Meron Productions. The pair recently worked with Chenoweth on NBC’s “Hairspray Live.” Zadan/Meron Productions’ head of development, Mark Nicholson, will serve as co-executive producer. Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith will serve as showrunners through Goldsmith Yuspa Productions. Universal Television will produce.

Zachary and Weiner are repped by CAA and Kraft-Engel Management. Chenoweth is repped by ICM, Primary Wave Management, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham. Zadan and Meron are repped by ICM and attorneys Kevin Yorn and Gregg Gellman. Yuspa and Goldsmith are repped by ICM.

This marks the latest ABC put pilot order with a major star attached this season. Previously, the network gave a put pilot order to “Spirited,” a drama that would star Laverne Cox as a a fake psychic who realizes she can really communicate with the dead. Elizabeth Banks is also attached to that project as an executive producer.

'Black Monday': How Showtime Dusted Off An Old '80s Logo For Its New Comedy

Cocaine’s a hell of a drug, but you’re not seeing things: That, indeed is Showtime’s old 1980s-era logo pasted all over marketing materials and promos for “Black Monday,” a tongue-in-cheek tale of the excesses exhibited by Wall Street traders in the lead-up to the stock market crash of 1987. The logo, which hasn’t been in [...]

    TV Review: 'Russian Doll'

This is a particularly tricky review to write, but not because the merits of “Russian Doll” are at all ambiguous.
