Mipcom: IM Global, Newen Partner on Original Content Creation for International Platforms

Newen has been pushing into English-language programming, and IM could be ideal partners to further that end

CANNES — L.A.-based IM Global Television and France’s Newen have inked a joint-venture pact to create original content for distribution across all international platforms.

The deal was brokered by IM Global’s Phil Gurin, president of unscripted and alternative, and Newen CEO in charge of content, Bibiane Godfroid.

IM Global Television is a joint venture from TMP and Tencent which develops, produces and distributes scripted and unscripted for domestic and international markets. The company has projects in development with, among others, FX, Amazon, eOne, SPTN, Netflix and Lifetime.

Gurin said: “We are excited about France, and about the creative auspices of Newen in particular. The opportunity to create original content with one of the leading companies in France fits perfectly into our brand of international cooperation and collaboration. We hope to launch primetime concepts, daily series and digital formats that can premiere either in the U.S. or France and then travel around the world. The opportunity for two highly motivated content creation companies to pool ideas and resources is what drives us.”

Newen is part of TF1 group, France’s largest private-sector, free-to-air broadcaster, with assets spanning across all scripted and non-scripted genres including animation. The company produces more than 1,500 hours of content each year and maintains a catalog of more than 5,000 hours of programming for international distribution. Recently the company has produced “Plus Belle La Vie,” for France 3, “Candice Renoir” for France 2, animated series “Loopdidoo,” and Netflix’s epic period-drama “Versailles.”

In May, Newen announced a $55 million investment fund for British drama in efforts to establish a strong presence in the English-language market, and a partnership with an international presence like IM Global is sure to pay dividends towards that end.

Fanchon Giorda, head of Newen’s development division, commented: “Newen is very pleased to announce this partnership with IM Global Television. Our common objective is the creation of new unscripted program or high-end documentaries. Innovation is at the heart of the dynamics of our two groups with the ambition to create the most attractive programs with an international scope.”
