Footage has surfaced of a gunman opening fire on attendees of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival near the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday night. At least 58 people have been reported dead and over 500 injured in what was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The chilling video shows a massive crowd of concertgoers taking cover in the moments following the gunman’s attack on the venue. Rapid-fire gunshots can be heard as panic ensued throughout the crowd.
Toward the end of the video, a man confirmed he was safe after narrating the scene. “Somebody went crazy, a lot of people been shot, a lot of people been killed,” he says. “Be safe out there tonight.” In a separate recording, a man said he grabbed a gun before heading back to the concert venue. “Saw a girl f—ing get shot in the face right next to me, her brains f—ing hanging out,” he says in the video.
Another attendee was recording Jason Aldean’s set when the sound of multiple gunshots stopped his performance. In the background, someone can be heard saying, “Those are gunshots,” while a woman warns people to get down and stay down. After a few moments of silence, another round of gunshots can be heard sounding off.
Police named Stephen Paddock, 64, as the gunman, and said that the Mesquite, Nev., resident was now dead by his own hand. A motive for the attack remains unclear.
