When Matt Mondanile left Real Estate in February of last year, the official reason given was so he could focus on his Ducktails project. However, today the band told Pitchfork and Spin that the guitarist was fired after “allegations of unacceptable treatment of women were brought to our attention.” Mondanile has denied any wrongdoing.
The band’s statement says in full: “Matt Mondanile was fired in February 2016 when allegations of unacceptable treatment of women were brought to our attention. While we urged him to seek counseling at the time of termination, we are no longer in contact. We feel that any abuse of one’s power or status to victimize another is completely unacceptable. We applaud the courage of the women who came forward to make us aware so that we could address the issue head on.”
According to Spin’s article, Real Estate drummer Jackson Pollis became aware of the allegations and threatened to leave the band if Mondanile was not ejected, and a former publicist for Ducktails quit when she became aware of them as well.
Spin says it will publish a more extensive report, including accounts from multiple women as well as Mondanile’s comments, in the coming days.
