Bleecker Street has bought U.S. rights to the romantic drama “On Chesil Beach,” which stars Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle.

Bleecker Street plans a 2018 release for the film, which premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Dominic Cooke directed the movie and Emily Watson, Anne-Marie Duff, Samuel West, and Adrian Scarborough also star.

“On Chesil Beach” is adapted by Ian McEwan from his novel and revolves around a young couple honeymooning on the English seaside.

Variety’s Peter Debruge gave the film a strong review at Toronto: “It’s a lyrical and rapturous film — a repressed passion play, funny, delicate and heartbreaking. It has an intoxicating quality of emotional wonder it shares with the acclaimed (but not yet released) Sundance hit ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ as well as a talky intimacy that recalls Richard Linklater’s ‘Before’ films. But it also has a quality all its own, a vision of love that’s shockingly old-fashioned and tinglingly audacious.”

Production companies Number 9 Films and BBC Films production. Producers are Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley. Executive producers are Babak Eftekhari, Wayne Marc Godfrey, Robert Jones, Zygi Kamas, Andrew Mackie, Joe Oppenheimer, Beth Pattinson, Richard Payten, and Thorsten Schumacher.

CAA handled the domestic deal. Rocket Science sold overseas territories. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
