Natalie Portman Embarks on Surreal and Horrifying Expedition in ‘Annihilation’ Trailer (Watch)

Natalie Portman leads what seems to be a doomed expedition into an overgrown and quarantined “Area X” in the unsettling first teaser-trailer for Paramount’s “Annihilation.”

On return, Portman’s downbeat biologist struggles to explain what happened about a mysterious entity her team encountered. “Did it communicate with you?” she is asked.

“It reacted to me,” she responds.

The trailer gives few clues as what happens during her expedition into “Area X.” The previous trip saw members return as shells of their former selves with all dying of cancer after coming back.

The film, based on Jeff VanderMeer’s horror sci-fi novel, is directed by Alex Garland from his own script. The story follows a biologist, played by Portman, who embarks on a four-person expedition into a territory cut off from civilization while searching for clues about her husband’s disappearance. While there, she must deal with a contamination, vanishing colleagues, a deadly animal, and a creature known as the Crawler.

Oscar Isaac plays Portman’s husband. Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Jason Leigh portray the other members of the search party. Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich are the producers.

Garland received an Academy Award nomination in the best original screenplay category for 2014’s “Ex Machina.”

Annihilation” opens in theaters on Feb. 23, 2018. Watch the trailer below:
