Playtime is set to co-produce and handle international sales on Dani de la Torre’s “Gun City,” a big-budget period Spanish thriller set in 1921, when Barcelona was being torn apart by Catalan gangs, mercenaries and anarchists.
Starring veteran Spanish actor Luis Tosar (“Cell 211”) and up-and-comer Michelle Jenner (“Isabel”), “Gun City” unfolds on the outskirts of Barcelona, where an unknown group of armed men raid a military train filled with weapons and ammunition. “Gun City” follows Inspector Anibal Uriarte who is assigned by the Federal Police to find the criminals, before it leads to even more death and suffering.
De la Torre last directed “Retribution” (“El desconocido”), a thriller also starring Tosar that was nominated for a Goya.
Budgeted at 5 million euros ($5.89 million), “Gun City” is being produced by Spain’s Vaca Films Studio and Atresmedia Cine/La Ley del Plomo with Playtime Prods. The pic is one of the most ambitious Spanish films slated for next year.
20th Century Fox will release the film in Spain. The expected delivery is next spring.
Playtime’s slate also includes “Sunset,” Laszlo Nemes’ follow-up to Oscar-winning “Son of Saul.” The company is also behind Robin Campillo’s “BPM (Beats Per Minute).”
