Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” launched in North America with a mighty $14.5 million on Thursday night.
It’s the fourth-highest preview of 2017 after “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at $17 million, “Beauty and the Beast” at $16.3 million, and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at $15.4 million.
“Thor: Ragnarok” generated a perfect score on comScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak audience survey with a rare five out of five stars. Of those surveyed, 28% of moviegoers vowed to see it again in theaters, 29% said they will buy the film on Blu-ray, and 84% said they would “definitely recommend” “Ragnarok” to their friends.
“It’s hammer time as massive pre-shows, stellar reviews, strong audience reaction, and huge social media buzz give Disney/Marvel yet another winner as ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ has set the stage for an epic weekend at the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.
Tracking for the third “Thor” movie has remained impressive since numbers came out last week with the latest forecasts in the $100 million to $118 million range for its debut at 4,080 locations. The rollout includes 3,400 3D screens, 391 Imax screens, 616 premium large format screens, and 204 D-Box locations.
“Thor: Ragnarok” is the 17th and best-reviewed title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It carries a 94% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the seventh Marvel movie to hit 90%.
“Thor: Ragnarok” is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. The character of Thor, based on Norse mythology, was created in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics.
Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” took in an impressive $109 million in its international launch last week in 52% of foreign markets, and expands to most other overseas territories this weekend.
“A Bad Moms Christmas” opened with a moderate $4.5 million at 3,615 North American sites on Wednesday and Thursday as the sequel got a two-day jump on the launch of “Thor: Ragnarok.” Forecasts have been in the $23 million to $26 million range for the Wednesday-Sunday period.
Audiences gave the movie a B Cinemascore, as opposed to the A that the original “Bad Moms” received when it in opened in July of 2016. The R-rated sequel was produced for $28 million, with Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn returning to star as under-appreciated and over-burdened women. Their characters’ mothers, played by Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon, show up unexpectedly for the Christmas season in Chicago.
