‘The Great Buddha+’ Picks up Ten Golden Horse Nominations

“The Great Buddha+,” a dark comedy, leads the race for the Golden Horse Awards, having collected nominations in ten categories. The film follows the voyeuristic antics of a pair of small town Taiwanese nobodies. It was directed by Huang Hsin-yao and produced and lensed by Chung Mung-hong, one of Taiwan’s top cinematographers. “Buddha+” previously won a hatful of prizes at the Taiwan Film Awards.

The awards are often considered as the most prestigious awards for Chinese-language film. This year, Taiwanese movies feature prominently.

Taiwanese multi-hyphenate Sylvia Chang’s “Love Education,” which is set as the closing film at the upcoming Busan festival, earned seven nominations. So too did Taiwan’s “The Bold, The Corrupt, and The Beautiful,” and “See You Tomorrow,” a China-Hong Kong co-production. Picking up five nominations each were Taiwan’s “Who Killed Cock Robin?,” and China’s “Our Time Will Come.”

In the running for the best film prize are: “The Great Buddha+,” “The Bold, The Corrupt, and The Beautiful,” “Free and Easy,” “Love Education,” and “Angels Wear White,” which played recently in Venice and Toronto.

The outstanding Taiwanese film maker of the year award will be given to Hu Din-ye, a veteran foley artist whose 40 year career includes “Who Killed Cock Robin,” and “The Last Painting.”

Prizes will be awarded on Nov. 25 at a ceremony at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.
