Historic Rutherford House in Beverly Hills Comes to Market

Location:
Beverly Hills, Calif.
Price:
$39.9 million
Size:
10,402 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 8 full and 2 half bathrooms

The longtime Beverly Hills home of “Gone With the Wind” actress Ann Rutherford and her second husband, actor-producer William Dozier, creator of the 1960s “Batman” TV series, is available with an asking price of almost $40 million.

The 1938 French Revival-style residence, originally built for former Beverly Hills mayor Edward Paul Dentzel, is owned through a trust linked to mortgage mogul Mark Cohen and his wife, Laurie, who purchased the property known as the Rutherford House in 2013 for $7.55 million.

Owned by Rutherford until her death in 2012, the house was substantially expanded by the Cohens and now provides a total of five bedrooms and eight full and two half bathrooms in almost 10,500-square-feet of interior space awash in lavish architectural details that include inlaid herringbone-pattern hardwood floors, antique marble fireplaces and, in the soignée den and adjoining billiards room, polished, Ruhlmann-inspired paneling.

An oval entrance hall with sweeping staircase leads to a spacious living room, a circular dining room and a library. A chef’s kitchen features a shimmering, metallic mosaic-tile ceiling, steel-accented black-and-white marble checkerboard floor and a butler’s pantry that leads to a breakfast room lined in 200-year-old Chinese wallpaper.

In addition to an elegant master suite with private sitting room and dual closets and bathrooms, the residence offers three family bedrooms plus separate staff quarters. A large terrace along the back of the house overlooks the private, formally landscaped yard and a photogenic oval swimming pool backed by a pool house with al fresco bar flanked by a gym and bathroom.

No strangers to architecturally significant homes with impressive Hollywood pedigrees, the Cohens previously owned a 1930s, Paul Williams-designed mansion in Holmby Hills once owned by illustrious filmmaker Joseph Mankiewicz and later, in the 1980s, by Aaron and Candy Spelling. The Cohens spent a fortune on a sumptuous overhaul featured in Architectural Digest and sold it in 2011 for $21.5 million to super-producer Joe Roth.
