Walter Iuzzolino’s subscription VOD service Walter Presents has acquired the streaming rights to the sex-crime series “Code 37” from Xiaojuan Zhou’s Attraction Distribution. The deal, the third between the companies, includes the U.K., the U.S., English-speaking Canada and Ireland. Attraction will be offering “Code 37” as part of its drama lineup during next week’s TV market Mipcom in Cannes.
During its first run on Belgium’s VTM, the series garnered a 44% market share in the local market. It has helped catapult the career of director Jakob Verbruggen, who is directing the first season of “The Alienist” for TNT, and also handled directing duties for Netflix’s “Black Mirror” and the penultimate episode and season four finale of Netflix’s “House of Cards.”
“Code 37” follows Hannah Maes, who starred in Oscar-nominated “Broken Circle Breakdown,” the new female chief of the Ghent police department’s all-male vice squad. “Sparks often fly as her male colleagues regularly challenge her, but through her cunning wit and combative attitude, Hannah eventually wins the respect of her team,” according to a statement.
“Together, they work night and day to solve the most sordid and unusual sex crimes afflicting their city. As well, Hannah is tormented by the violent assault on her mother that occurred several years ago, and as she gets to the bottom of things, it now appears that her father is more involved than he would like to admit.”
