Facebook Orders Online Teen Drama ‘Skam’

Simon Fuller behind the English-language remake of innovative, online drama

Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment will make an English-language version of “Skam,” the hit teen drama series out of Scandinavia for Facebook.

The Norwegian language version of “Skam” (“Shame” in English) has run through four seasons on Norwegian pubcaster NRK. Aimed squarely at teen viewers, the unusual production and release pattern sees new content is produced daily and distributed online, before being packaged for traditional TV.

It will be on Facebook’s new Watch service and Facebook’s global content chief, Ricky  Van Veen announced the deal at Mipcom in Cannes. “When I first heard about ‘Skam,’ it felt like I was seeing the future of storytelling.” Van Veen said. “We’re incredibly enthusiastic about bringing it to global audiences on Facebook Watch”, said Ricky Van Veen, Facebook’s Head of Creative Strategy.

The English-language version of drama will roll out on Facebook’s Watch platform and be executive produced by Fuller after his XIX Entertainment picked up the U.S. rights earlier this year.

“From the first moment I heard about it I thought about Facebook as my partner” he said. “Facebook Watch, with its inherently social components and passionate community of fans that surround it, is the absolute perfect partner for ‘Skam.’”

A raft of global deals for “Skam” were unveiled at MIPCOM this week. Beta Film handles sales and sealed deals with France Télévisions, ZDF in Germany, and Movistar+ in Spain among others.
