Celebrities Mourn Texas Shooting and Call for End to Gun Violence: ‘We Can Do Better’

A gunman opened fire inside a church in Sutherland Springs, Tex. Sunday morning, killing at least 20 people and injuring at least eight more.

Celebrities were quick to express their support of Texas on Twitter and send condolences, as well as voice their frustration with the continuing gun violence.

“My heart breaks over the news coming out of Texas,” wrote Britney Spears. “My prayers are with the Sutherland Springs community.”

Mark Ruffalo wrote that “we are all in this together” and sent love to the “dear folks and families and friends to those lost in today’s Sutherland Springs shooting.”

“Scandal’s” Tony Goldwyn sent his thoughts and prayers to Sutherland Springs.

“Texas,” wrote “Orange Is the New Black” star Ruby Rose. “My heart is heavy for you today and for the families involved. May you be loved and consoled by your community and the world.”

Comedian Sarah Silverman posted, “No words. My heart is broken for Sutherland Springs, TX and for 2017 America. Please let’s all come together.”

Matty Healy of English band The 1975 wrote, “My thoughts are with those in Texas caught up in another avoidable and senseless tragedy. Haven’t heard the word terrorist, he must be white.”

Many were incensed by House Speaker Paul Ryan’s tweet, in which he wrote that the people of Sutherland Springs need prayers.

“Veep’s” Timothy Simons retweeted Ryan’s message, adding, “nah bro they need to not be f—–g dead by gun violence f—–g do something you coward.”

Rob Delaney also retweeted Ryan and posted, “Hey get off Twitter & go back to work making sure the victims who didn’t die go bankrupt from the medical bills they’ll get.” He continued with a satirical tone: “I was just murdered at the church in Texas & my mom was sad but then a Paul Ryan Prayer floated up & enveloped her & now she’s at peace.”

Director Adam McKay referred to the “mass carnage” in Sutherland Springs and wrote “the idea of zero new gun safety laws isn’t just idiotic it’s murderous.”
