Producer Emma Thomas on MPTF: ‘It’s an Incredible Resource’

As a prolific film producer, Emma Thomas has spent years behind the camera, working alongside her husband, Christopher Nolan, on a lineup dating back from “Memento” through the Batman films to this year’s “Dunkirk.”

But her most fulfilling work, she says, is being part of the Motion Picture Television Fund, where she serves on two boards.

“When I came to Hollywood, I had this idea of it being a cutthroat industry where everyone is out for themselves,” she says. “And what you realize the more you engage in and hear what this fund is all about, it’s the exact opposite. The reason it’s still around and the reason it’s done so well a hundred years in is people care about each other. Over the years, the titans of our industry have recognized that they owe something to the people that they work with and our community. That’s a really special thing. I can’t think of any parallel in any other industry.”

Thomas first got involved purely as a donor. “Like many people in town, we got the call from Jeffrey Katzenberg at some point,” she says of MPTF’s chairman. “When you get that call, you listen.”
