In what could be interpreted by overly superstitious people as an ominous sign, Wednesday’s “America’s Got Talent” was edged out by “Big Brother” in the 18-49 demographic: The housemates’ antics on CBS garnered a 1.8 demo rating in early Nielsen results, while NBC’s televised talent show weighed in with a 1.7. “AGT” did draw 3.36 million more total viewers (9.14 million vs. 5.78 million).

A two-hour episode of NBC’s “The Night Shift” gave NBC a 0.8 in the demo and 4.96 million total viewers, while at 10 p.m., CBS’ “American Gothic” pulled in an anemic 0.5 demo and 2.52 million viewers in toto. CBS research anticipates that demo to rise 58% in the live-plus-seven ratings, which still puts it at a 0.8.

A two-hour “MasterChef” on Fox gave that network a 1.2 in the demo and 3.71 million total viewers, just beating out ABC’s three-hour average for the CMA Music Festival in the demo (1.1), though the televised hoedown drew 5.54 million total viewers. The CMA fest set a new low in the demo from last year’s record (1.2), but its total audience was up this year from 2015 (5.19 million).

The CW had a consistent evening, with “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and a combo block of one new and one repeat “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” all drawing 0.4 demo ratings and nearly the same total viewer count (1.41 million, 1.37 million and 1.24 million, respectively), revealing that America might have difficulty telling the difference between new episodes and repeats of “Whose Line.”
