‘You’re the Worst’ Cast Teases Season 3 Changes

FXX brought “Sunday Funday” to Neuehouse Hollywood as the “You’re The Worst” cast and crew gathered to celebrate the upcoming third season. A recurring theme is family, in all its dysfunctional glory, as the Worsties try to become better versions of themselves.

Creator/executive producer Stephen Falk introduced the screening and incorporated the show’s trademark raunch, declaring, “You’re The Worst is a scruffy little show about two alcoholic narcissists, about finding someone with whom the fear of judgment is absent, because they’re just as messed up and weird as you are. It’s also about blowjobs, child abandonment, breakfast, gangbang porn, harmonicas, hip-hop, cucking, clinical depression, and heckles writers’ disgusting habit to self-mythologize.”

The new season brings big changes for the foursome. Jimmy writes a new book and also suffers a personal loss, which actor Chris Geere said, “starts a new phase of reevaluation for him. Jimmy explores who he really is, what he likes and doesn’t like, and how Gretchen will play a part in that.”

Aya Cash, whose performance of Gretchen’s varying degrees of clinical depression is compellingly watchable, said “I don’t think anyone gets better, I think they just take turns. I think Gretchen’s on an upswing this year, but other people are swinging real low.” Gretchen proves to be a challenge for therapist Justina, played by Samira Wiley of “Orange is the New Black” fame.

Kether Donohue’s Lindsay is pregnant and reunited with husband Paul but has qualms about her role as housewife. Donohue noted, “Lindsay goes in and out of the dark. It’s always stewing underneath and boils up like a volcano in spurts. Lindsay really does want answers and wants to grow but she doesn’t quite know how to do that.”

Edgar, played by Desmin Borges, is still dating improv teacher Dorothy and he becomes an activist for his fellow combat veterans.

Producer-director Wendey Stanzler helmed nine of this season’s thirteen episodes. Prior to “You’re The Worst,” Stanzler worked on a wide range of shows such as “Sex and the City” (as editor) to directing genre shows like “The Flash” and “Arrow.” Stanzler described the qualities that make “You’re The Worst” special: “It’s raised the bar in terms of what I expect. The writing is exceptional. It never dips. There’s no other cast like this. I don’t know any actors that could have five episodes in their head and switch between them. They’re all so committed and hard-working.”

Season 3 of “You’re the Worst” premieres Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 10 p.m. on FXX.
