‘Scandal’: Darby Stanchfield Teases Abby’s ‘Major Change’ in the White House

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Feb. 11 episode of “Scandal,” titled, “It’s Hard Out Here for a General.”

In the Season 5 midseason premiere of “Scandal,” Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Olivia (Kerry Washington) didn’t come in contact, but the president did get closer to Abby (Darby Stanchfield) — too close for comfort.

After Fitz had repeatedly called Abby multiple times at 2 o’clock in the morning on Thursday’s episode, Abby had a girls night with Olivia, venting to her: “I’ve got no life … What is his problem?”

By the end of the episode, when Abby received yet another call in the middle of the night from Fitz, she finally stormed into the Oval Office, exclaiming, “The job I’ve had around here recently is a different kind of job. I’m not a companion animal!”

Clearly, with Olivia out of the White House and no longer by Fitz’s side, the president is finding comfort in Abby’s company, but Stanchfield insists her character will not cross a romantic line with Fitz. But, she did tell Variety that Abby’s dynamic with Fitz continues to change drastically in the back half of Season 5. “In the next few episodes, Abby has a major change in her role in the White House. It’s major. Capital M-A-J-O-R,” Stanchfield stressed.

How soon will Abby’s major moment come about? “I would say it’s a few episodes in,” Stanchfield teased.

Staying mum on the reveal, Stanchfield said even her cast members were shocked by the imminent twist in Abby’s storyline. “At the table read when we see this major change happen for Abby, all of the actors who have been doing this for a few years now were actually looking at me differently,” she said with a laugh.

It’s not just Abby who changed in the new episodes of “Scandal,” though. Aside from Olivia who “has her mojo back,” Stanchfield said the rest of the season is all about discovering new sides of the characters.

“At least in the first few episodes, you just find big reveals pretty much about every character in terms of where they’re headed to next or what they’re about or a reveal about a relationship,” she said. “I saw it’s a chess game and they’re all moving parts and all of these new plays are being made.
