Ratings: ‘NCIS,’ ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ Dominate Tuesday for CBS

CBS drama “NCIS” and “NCIS: New Orleans” were the dominant performers on Tuesday, which also saw another strong showing by CW’s “The Flash” and more low numbers for ABC’s “The Muppets” and “Agent Carter.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “NCIS” (2.3 rating/8 share in adults 18-49, 17.2 million viewers overall) was Tuesday’s No. 1 program in 18-49, 25-54 (3.5/10) and total viewers, even if it was a bit below its prior two February originals. It was followed by an impressive performance by “NCIS: New Orleans” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall), which was the night’s No. 2 program in many categories and posted its highest rating of the season for any episode that wasn’t a crossover with “NCIS.” The sophomore drama opened up its widest advantage to date over NBC’s “Chicago Med” (+43% in 18-49, 2.0 vs. 1.4).

Closing the night, “Limitless” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) posted more uninspired numbers; it ran second among the broadcasters for its hour.

At CW, “The Flash” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall) was just slightly below its season highs of last week, placing second for the 8 p.m. hour in 18-49 and total viewers and first (ahead of “NCIS”) in both adults 18-34 (1.2/5) and men 18-34 (1.4/7). And “iZombie” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) was up over its recent originals, though it could adjust down to its more typical 0.5 rating in the finals.

For the night, CW finished ahead of Fox and ABC in 18-49 and also bested Fox in total viewers.

Elsewhere, NBC was down from prior Tuesday weeks this year as “Hollywood Game Night” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall), “Chicago Med” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) and “Chicago Fire” (second-place 1.6/5 in 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall) all dropped — though
Fire” again was the broadcast leader for the 10 o’clock hour. “Chicago Med” figures to be more competitive in the time period when it has “The Voice” as its lead-in this spring, but last night it was no match for “NCIS: New Orleans.”

At Fox, “New Girl” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) was down a couple of tenths from last week, and that brought the comedies behind it all down a tick apiece: “Grandfathered” (0.8/2 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.1 million viewers overall) and “The Grinder” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 1.7 million viewers overall).

ABC again placed fifth among the broadcast networks, as only “Fresh Off the Boat” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) had much of a pulse. It was up a tenth from last week and followed by the steady but low-rated “The Muppets” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) and a season low for “Marvel’s Agent Carter” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall), which expanded to two hours.

“Fresh Off the Boat,” which has been something of an island on Tuesdays, should get more support in a couple of weeks with the timeslot premiere of new comedy “The Real O’Neals” as well as the return of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.”

In late-night Tuesday, NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (1.0) beat the combined 18-49 ratings of timeslot rivals “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC (0.4) and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (0.4), according to Nielsen’s 25 markets with local people-meters. The Peacock’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” placed second among all programs for the night (0.5).
