Simmons, whose new TV show “Any Given Sunday” was recently cancelled by HBO, tweeted on Sunday night that “someone needs to gently break the news” to NBC’s Collinsworth that his analysis of the Seahawks-Patriots game was incorrect.
The “Sunday Night Football” commentator apparently got the message and “gently” fired back with a zinger of his own, reminding Simmons about his short-lived HBO series.
He later deleted the tweet.
Simmons, formerly of ESPN, has endured somewhat a media slump in recent weeks.
After the cancellation of his talk show, which only averaged 200,000 viewers, The New York Times reported on Sunday that Simmons’ new website, The Ringer, was suffering from low numbers since launching in June. During the month of September, the sports and pop culture blog drew just 680,000 unique visitors, up from 643,000 visitors in August. Grantland.com, Simmons’ previous website, had produced over 6 million unique visitors per month before ESPN terminated the company and its staff upon his exit.
The Boston sports personality later called ESPN’s decision “callous” and “appalling.”
