Creepy Details of Roger Ailes, Donald Trump Dealings Emerge in Megyn Kelly’s Book

The tense relationship between Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and Donald Trump, now the president-elect, has been well-documented. But surprising new details are now being revealed in her upcoming book, “Settle for More,” which The New York Times published a review of Thursday after obtaining a copy.

Kelly reveals that before she moderated the first debate, someone leaked to Trump that the first question was “a very pointed question directed at him,” and he called Fox executives to complain. It was, of course, true: She questioned his temperament for presidency given his history of using disparaging language for women.

She also brings up another odd incident about the debate that night: Her driver that night insisted on giving her a cup of coffee, and 15 minutes later, she was violently ill — so much so that she kept a garbage can under the desk throughout the debate.

Kelly’s relationship with Trump famously soured after that night. Although he had to tried to court her before then, with an invitation to his Florida estate; after the debate, he unleashed the full invective of his Twitter account on her. And she found herself caught between the then-candidate and her boss, Roger Ailes, who was trying to play peacemaker. He’d call her and question her: “He felt the bar for skeptical Trump coverage should be higher,” she writes.

Ailes, of course, faced his own issues with sexual harassment, and was forced to exit his post atop the network. as multiple women came forward to reveal their stories. Kelly has her own tales to tell, writing that her boss tried to kiss her in 2006 and had discussed wanting to see her in the “very sexy bras” she must own.

So when Gretchen Carlson went public with her own charges against Ailes, Kelly realized she “had a choice to make” — and called NewsCorp executive co-chair Lachlan Murdoch. “I could ensure that the owners of Fox News Channel — Rupert Murdoch and his sons — understood they might actually have a predator running their company,” she writes.

“Settle for More” will be published on Tuesday.
