ABC Picks Up Felicity Huffman, Courtney B. Vance Comedy to Pilot

And just like that, pilot season has begun…

ABC has given a formal pilot order to “Libby & Malcolm,” the comedy starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance from creators Kenya Baris and Vijal Patel, Variety has learned.

The half-hour, single-camera comedy is a blended family show about two polar-opposite political pundits who fall in love despite all odds and form an insta-family, as well as a work partnership.

Huffman stars as Libby, a strong, brilliant, white Republican. Vance stars as Malcolm Black, a liberal pundit and father of three kids who arms himself with cold hard facts and an irresistible easy charm that wins over everyone he meets. The opposing pair recently married and forge a new life together at home against all odds, while going head-to-head at work on their fiery new political talk show.

The hot project had previously landed a hefty pilot production commitment. The initial order was promising, and now has been sealed with an official pilot pickup.

The comedy hails from one of ABC’s most trusted writer/producers, “Black-ish” creator Barris, who co-wrote the pilot with Patel. Both will serve as executive producers, along with E. Brian Dobbins, plus Huffman and Vance. ABC Studios is producing.

The pickup for “Libby & Malcolm” kicks off pilot season, marking the first official pilot order for the 2017-2018 season among the broadcast networks.
