David Leavy has been promoted to chief corporate operations and communications officer for Discovery Communications.

The 16-year Discovery vet will take on oversight of global technology and operations, which includes the broadcast functions serving more than 220 countries worldwide, IT and security matters. Leavy most recently had been chief communications officer and senior exec VP of corporate marketing and business operations. He reports to CEO David Zaslav.

“I am very proud of David and his commitment and contributions at Discovery over a long period of time,” said Zaslav. “He is a great guy who has had a big impact on our global growth, purpose-driven culture and business operations. Beyond his leadership, work ethic and general capacity, David is one of the most dedicated managers and versatile executives at the company.”

Leavy already oversees a big portion of Discovery’s operations including talent management, government relations and public policy matters. He also spearheads its in-house advertising agency, the Discovery Agency.

“I love Discovery — the people, the brand, the mission, the leadership,” Leavy said. He called it “the most collaborative, dynamic and creative environment in the world.”

Before joining Discovery, Leavy worked as chief spokesman and senior director of public affairs for the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton.
