Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett team up to form a sleuthing odd couple in the first look trailer for BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.”
The series follows the surreal adventures of a highly unconventional detective, Dirk Gently (Barnett) and his reluctant assistant Todd (Wood). Together they navigate one big metaphysical mystery per season.
The trailer shows Gently reveling in all his eccentricities.
“You don’t look like a private detective,”Amanda Brotzman (Hannah Marks) tells Gently, who responds, “No private detective looks like a private detective.”
The first look addresses the obvious comparison to Sherlock Holmes when an exasperated Todd yells at Gently, “I am not your Watson.”
In the end, it doesn’t seem like Todd has much of a choice. “The universe will make you a part of this whether you are complicit or not,” Gently says. “You are now a vital part of the investigation.”
Barnett is best know as Renfield in “Penny Dreadful,” and Wood became a household name after starring in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
“Dirk Gently” is a cult-favorite property from the novelist Douglas Adams, known for his “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series.
A four-episode adaptation of “Dirk Gently” starring Stephen Mangan aired on BBC4 in 2010 and 2012.
