BBC has picked up U.K. rights to Red Arrow International’s futuristic genre drama “Cleverman,” which it will air on its newly-launched BBC Three online platform.

Series, which stars Iain Glen, Frances O’Connor, Deborah Mailman, Hunter Page-Lochard, Rob Collins and Stef Dawson, will preem to Brit auds later this year, following the program’s world preem on SundanceTV in the U.S. on June 1 and on ABC and ABC iview in Australia on June 2.

The deal marks the BBC’s first drama acquisition for BBC Three since it launched as an online, over-the-top distribution platform in February 2016.

Set in the near future, “Cleverman” sees a species from ancient mythology living amongst humans and battling for survival in a world that wants to silence, exploit and destroy them. At the heart of the story are two estranged brothers, Koen and Waruu West, who are forced together to fight against terrifying enemies – both human and not of this world.

Story is based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen and is directed by Wayne Blair (“The Sapphires”) and Leah Purcell. Goalpost Pictures Australia and Pukeko Pictures New Zealand produce for ABC TV in OZ in co-production with Sundance TV and Red Arrow International with the assistance of Screen Australia, Screen NSW and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant.

“‘Cleverman’ is an incredibly original and ambitious drama which is gripping from the very start,” said BBC head of program acquisition Sue Deeks. “We are very excited to bring it to BBC Three viewers.”
