Freeform Nabs TV Rights for Sofia Carson’s ‘Cinderella Story’ Sequel

“A Cinderella Story” is coming back with a new, modernized version of the classic Disney tale, starring Disney Channel starlet Sofia Carson, and Freeform has nabbed the TV rights with plans to air the movie by early 2017.

Titled “A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits,” the latest installment from Warner Bros.’ “Cinderella Story” franchise is being made by the studio’s home entertainment division. The movie is currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa.

In “If the Shoe Fits,” Carson stars as Tessa, who is forced to accompany her evil stepmother (Jennifer Tilly) and stepsisters to a Cinderella competition and work as their assistant. While at the competition, Tessa realizes she has what it takes to be the next Cinderella and, though hesitant at first, she decides that it’s time to follow her heart and make her dreams become reality, so she auditions. Thomas Law stars as the prince.

Michelle Johnston, who produced and choreographed the former “Cinderella” installments, is directing the pic with a script by Elena Song.

The first “Cinderella Story” hit theaters in 2004, with Hilary Duff starring in the film that made over $70 million at the box office. In 2008, Selena Gomez was the star of the straight-to-DVD sequel “Another Cinderella Story,” which was then followed by “A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song,” also released straight-to-DVD, in which “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale played the main character.

“A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits” keeps Carson in the ABC/Disney family. She’s best known for Disney Channel’s original movie “Descendants,” which has a sequel telepic lined up. Next, she will star in Disney’s remake of “Adventures in Babysitting,” which is set to air this year.
