U.K.’s Channel 4 Greenlights Two Further Seasons of Comedy ‘Catastrophe’

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has greenlit the third and fourth seasons of comedy “Catastrophe,” whose first two seasons were picked up by Amazon Prime in the U.S., although it is unclear if the streaming platform has acquired the forthcoming seasons as well.

The series, which launched in 2015, is written by and stars Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney. The third, six-part season will go into production in November for a premiere on Channel 4 next year.

“Catastrophe” won Royal Television Society awards for scripted comedy and comedy writer, Broadcasting Press Guild awards for comedy and writer, a BAFTA TV Craft award for comedy writer, a Rose D’Or Award for sitcom, and a Golden Nymphs award for comedy actress.

The response in the press has been glowing. Britain’s Observer newspaper called it the “funniest comedy of the year,” while The New York Times said that the lead duo “joke splendidly and fight even better.”

Phil Clarke, head of comedy at Channel 4, described the show as “a brave, razor-edged, excruciatingly honest and painfully funny portrayal of a modern, long-term relationship.”

The series is produced by Avalon Television and co-produced by Birdbath Productions and Merman. The series is directed by Ben Taylor and produced by Jack Bayles, and the executive producers are Richard Allen-Turner, Kara Baker, Rob Delaney, Sharon Horgan and Jon Thoday.
