CBS Sweeps the Broadcast Top 10 in Weekly Total-Viewer Rankings

On the heels of its Super Bowl 50 telecast on Feb. 7, CBS scored a rare achievement on the ratings front last week — sweeping the broadcast top 10 in total viewers.

Longtime anchors “NCIS” (16.94 million) and “The Big Bang Theory” (16.25 million) were the most-watched series for the Feb. 8-14 frame, according to Nielsen, and coverage of Saturday’s Republican presidential primary debate ranked third among broadcast programs (13.44 million). Overall, the top 10 telecasts spanned all genres — drama, comedy, reality and news — and were spread out over six nights.

According to CBS, this was the first time since at least December 2005 (the start of Nielsen’s “live plus same-day” ratings stream) that any network delivered all of the top 10 broadcast programs for the week. (AMC’s “The Walking Dead” made the primetime top 10 overall last week with its midseason return.)

CBS won last week in total viewers by a commanding 84% margin over runner-ups ABC and NBC (9.4 million vs. 5.1 million). The Eye also prevailed in adults 18-49, following up its monster Super Bowl week with a second consecutive victory.

Though it didn’t make the week’s top 10, “The Amazing Race” was a solid performer for CBS with the premiere of its winter/spring cycle — winning its Friday hour across the board (1.3/5 in 18-49, 6.09 million viewers overall). The attempt to reach younger viewers with a season that featured 11 teams of social-media stars seemed to work, as “Race” was up vs. its fall premiere in all key categories and saw significant jumps among teens 12-17 (+100%, 0.8 vs. 0.4) and men 12-34 (+75%, 0.7 vs. 0.4).
