But showrunner Jill Soloway talked to Variety on Saturday about who exactly the reality TV mainstay will play in the Amazon show.
“She plays the Pfefferman’s cousin,” Soloway said. Her words hung in the air until Amy Landecker burst into laughter at the misdirect. “That’s not true at all,” Soloway confessed.
The show’s creator then described Jenner’s real role.
“She’s in a dream sequence. [Gaby Hoffmann’s character] Ali has a kind of wild, nitrous-inspired goddess-worshiping dream sequence,” Soloway said. “And you can’t talk about the goddess without Ntozake Shange and Caitlyn Jenner who are both in the dream.”
Shange is a feminist playwright and poet who writes about race and gender.
When asked by Variety’s Jenelle Riley how it was working with Jenner in the scene, Hoffmann replied, “She was great. She was a total natural. She was funny. She was great at improvising.”
Jeffrey Tambor chimed in to express how he feels about Jenner’s visibility as a trans woman.
“She floats all boats,” Tambor said. “Everybody is better for this in the community because of her authentic decision and her courageous decision.”
