Freeform has given the greenlight to The Lonely Island’s comedy series “Alone Together.” The cable network announced the pickup on Thursday.
The 30-minute scripted comedy hails from the comedic trio, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.
“Alone Together” will tell the story of two overlooked millennial misfits from different backgrounds who enjoy a male-female platonic relationship as they try to navigate life in Los Angeles.
Esther Povitsky (“Lady Dynamite,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and Benji Aflalo (“Not Safe with Nikki Glaser”) will star and created the series. They will play as Esther and Benji, platonic best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back…and they have nobody else to hang out with.
The pilot also features guest stars Chris D’Elia (“Undateable”), Ginger Gonzaga (“Wrecked”), Edgar Blackmon (“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”), Hayley Marie Norman (“Adam Ruins Everything”), Kamilla Alnes (“American Horror Story”), Jim O’Heir (“Parks and Recreation”) and Justine Lupe (“Younger”).
“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer,” said Karey Burke, Freeform’s executive vice president of programming and development. “Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10’s as self-proclaimed 6’s.”
Aside from starring, Povitsky and Aflalo also co-wrote the pilot with Eben Russell (“Girl Boss”). They will all serve as executive producers, along with new Hulu exec Billy Rosenberg, Hunter Covington, plus Samberg, Taccone and Schaffer. Daniel Gray Longino (“Lady Dynamite,” “Portlandia”) directed the pilot.
