Emmy Awards: Peter Scolari Nominated for Guest Actor in a Comedy, Replacing Peter MacNicol

The Emmys traded one Peter for another. The Television Academy has announced that Peter Scolari has been nominated for guest actor in a comedy series for his role as Tad Horvath in HBO’s “Girls.”

He joins previously announced nominees Martin Mull (HBO’s “Veep”), Larry David (NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”), Tracy Morgan (NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”), Bob Newhart (CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory”) and Bradley Whitford (Amazon’s “Transparent”). Whitford won the trophy last year.

Peter MacNicol, who had been nommed for his role in “Veep” as Jonah Simons’ uncle Jeff Kane, was disqualified on Wednesday when it was discovered that he had appeared in five of the season’s ten episodes.

According to new Emmy rules that were instituted last year, performers may only submit as guest actors if they appear in “less than 50%” of the eligible episodes.

This is Scolari’s fourth Emmy nomination and first for his recurring role as the father of Hannah (Lena Dunham) on “Girls.” He received three consecutive nominations for his supporting role on “Newhart” between 1987 and 1989.

A source tells Variety that Scolari had received the next highest number of votes in the category, moving him up to the open slot once MacNicol was disqualified.

MacNicol congratulated Scolari on the news of his nomination, posting a message on Twitter:

It’s also the only Emmy nomination for “Girls” this year, which had received at least two Emmy nominations in each of its previous four seasons. The nod for Scolari also leaves intact HBO’s total nominations of 94, the most of any network or studio.

The guest category winners will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 10 and 11, followed by the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 18.
