Mipcom: MTG Studios Orders Second Season of ‘Swedish Dicks,’ Lionsgate TV Takes Global Distribution Rights

PARIS — Sweden’s Modern Times Group has commissioned a second season of the hit comedy series “Swedish Dicks.” Lionsgate Television, which recently picked up global distribution rights to the first season, has now boarded Season 2.

The first original series of MTG’s streaming service, Viaplay, “Swedish Dicks” stars Peter Stormare (“American Gods”), Swedish stand-up comedian Johan Glans, and Keanu Reeves, who appears in several episodes. It turns on two unlicensed Swedish private investigators trying to make a living in L.A.

Produced by MTG-owned Brain Academy and LA-based Viking Brothers Entertainment, the Swedish-American series is the first Nordic title to be distributed worldwide by Lionsgate. Season 1 will premiere in the U.S. early next year. Season 2 will roll out on Viaplay in late 2017.

Commenting on the announcement of Season 2, Stormare said, “This might be the first time in my career I can watch myself without throwing up. It’s all thanks to a great creative team, including Viaplay, and a fantastic cast.”

Jakob Mejlhede, MTG’s exec VP and head of programming and content development, said “Swedish Dicks” demonstrates MTG’s “ambition to become the Nordic region’s leading producer of original content.”

Chris Selak, Lionsgate Television Group’s exec VP, said the show “combines an internationally recognized cast, superb writing and outstanding ratings in its first season on Viaplay.”

“Great content knows no boundaries, and we are already receiving inquiries from buyers all over the world,” noted Selak.

MTG Studios has recently announced the production of Nordic noir drama “Hassel,” starring Ola Rapace; its first original film, “SuperSwede,” about the life of Swedish Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson; and its first kids’ series, “The Big Experiment,” which will premiere on Viaplay in the Nordics on Dec. 1.
