‘Homeland’ Predecessor ‘Prisoners of War’ Set for Indian Remake

TEL AVIV — “Prisoners of War,” the blockbuster Israeli series that was adapted for U.S. audiences into the Emmy Award-winning “Homeland,” is headed for a fresh adaptation in India.

Keshet International, the global distribution and production arm of Israeli media giant Keshet, has signed a series license deal for the drama format with India’s Star Plus, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox with hundreds of millions of viewers across the region. Bollywood helmer Nikkhil Advani (“Kal Ho Na No”) has signed on to direct.

Prisoners of War,” a nail-biting thriller about two soldiers struggling to rebuild their lives in Israel after 17 years in captivity, shattered records in Israel when it premiered in 2011, and remains one of the nation’s most beloved dramas. Created, written and directed by Gideon Raff, the program was Hulu’s first-ever foreign language exclusive series, and has been adapted for local audiences in territories including South Korea, Russia and Turkey. Its U.S. adaptation, “Homeland,” has earned several Emmys and is currently in production on its sixth season.

Keshet International, which has outposts in Hong Kong, London and Los Angeles, is eager to continue making inroads across India, a nation with 1.2 billion potential viewers and a strong friendship with Israel.

“The versatility of [‘Prisoners of War’] is evident, since it has attracted a dedicated following anywhere it has aired in the world,” said Keren Shahar, managing director of distribution at Keshet International. “Securing this deal with a highly esteemed partner is indicative of KI’s future ambitions in India.”
