“I’ll be the sixth lead in the indie film and that’s ok,” joked comedian Chris Gethard Wednesday night at the Sunshine Landmark Cinema for the New York premiere of “Don’t Think Twice.”

“It’s easier for [photographers] to take pictures of me until Keegan[-Michael Key] gets here,” Gethard laughed – playing off the theme of the film, which follows a New York City improv troupe. When one member gets his big break, they begin to realize they can’t all make it in the business.

While the movie surrounds comedians played by Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, and Mike Birbiglia, producer Miranda Bailey said the film is a “drama about comedy.”

“It’s more about friendship and life and it’s about an experience. What does success do to friendships and jealousy? It explores those kinds of things in a really funny way.”

Key, who jokingly crawled along the red carpet to take a quick break from interviews, told Variety, “The big theme of the film is people trying to figure out where do I belong in the world right now in this time in this moment.” Reflecting on his own rise to fame Key added, “The film touched me very personally.”

Birbiglia, who wrote, directed, and co-starred in the film said he wore many hats “to keep an eye” on the storyline.

“I had a very specific vision,” he said. “I wanted it to feel more like life than it feels like a movie – where you feel more like a fly on the wall to people’s existence.”

After the screening, Birbiglia held a pizza party at Hill & Dale in New York’s Lower East Side, where he snapped photos with Micucci and Jacobs while Key and Gethard talked over pizza and wine. Other celebrity guests included SNL’s Aidy Bryant, Sasheer Zamata, and Jorma Taccone.

“Don’t Think Twice” opens in New York July 22, Los Angeles and Chicago July 29, and nationwide in August.
