Rihanna was forced to cancel her performance at the 58th annual Grammy Awards due to a viral infection.
“Based on Rihanna’s examination after her Grammy rehearsal today, her doctor put her on 48-hour rest to avoid hemorrhaging her vocal chords,” her rep said in a statement. “The antibiotics she has been on for three days did not kill the infection adequately. Therefore she cannot perform safely.”
Rihanna was slated to perform her new song “Kiss It Better” about an hour into Monday’s show, with “The Late Late Show” James Cordon introducing her, but CBS’ telecast skipped the pop star and cut straight to the Best Country album award with Corden instead joining host L.L Cool J to present the award.
In 2009, Rihanna and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown cancelled their Grammy appearances at the last minute after Brown brutally assaulted the singer in his car. Their reps initially told the press they had been involved in a car accident. Brown later plead guilty to felony assault.
TMZ first reported the Rihanna cancellation.
