Beyonce Opens BET Awards in Surprise Performance With Kendrick Lamar

The BET Awards, or the BEY Awards?

Beyonce kicked off the 2016 BET Awards with a bang, appearing for a surprise performance to open up the show. She performed her song “Freedom” off her new album “Lemonade,” starting the show with dancers walking through the audience to the tune of a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I’mma wave through the water, tell the tide ‘don’t move,'” Beyonce sang as her dancers, aptly, kicked up water behind her. That’s until the performance heated up — quite literally.

Kendrick Lamar, who’s featured on the track, appeared on stage to rap his verse, as male dancers joined the women on stage to form an intense two lines. Fire flared up behind them, and Beyonce danced behind Lamar as he rapped, appearing to mimic his movements.

By the end of the performance, it was just Beyonce and Lamar on stage, stomping and kicking water as the audience screamed over the surprise performance.

Beyonce recently debuted her latest album and is in the middle of her Formation World Tour, with her next stop being England.

The BET Awards is airing live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson are hosting.
