Based on Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 movie, “Amelie” squeezes onto a Broadway slate that is already crowded with new musicals — but unlike last season, when “Hamilton” dominated from the get-go, there’s no clear awards frontrunner. “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” opened Monday night to largely glowing reviews, while still to come are “A Bronx Tale,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “In Transit,” “Come From Away,” “War Paint,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Anastasia” and “Bandstand.” “Paramour” and “Holiday Inn” opened earlier in the season.
Phillipa Soo, nominated for a Tony Award for her turn in “Hamilton” (and the originator of one of the title roles in earlier incarnations of “Great Comet”), will star as Amelie, reprising a role she will play in the musical’s pre-Broadway run at the Ahmanson Theater next month. She co-stars opposite Adam Chanler-Berat (“Peter and the Starcatchers”) in a production directed by Pam MacKinnon (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”) and choreographed by Sam Pinkleton.
With book by Craig Lucas, music by Daniel Messe of the band Hem and lyrics by Nathan Tysen (“Tuck Everlasting”) and Messe, “Amelie” centers on a shy young woman in Paris who 0rchetrates whimsical surprises for the people around her. The musical had its world premiere last year at Berkeley Rep.
