“Visaaranai” received the grand jury prize for best feature at the 14th annual Indian Film Festival Los Angeles at ArcLight Hollywood. While “Parched,” directed by Leena Yadav, won the audience award Sunday night.
The festival, which is devoted to the greater appreciation of Indian cinema, showcased nearly 30 films including features, documentaries and shorts.
“This film took us to a very specific time and place while also shedding light on a universal phenomena of displacement and vulnerability,” the narrative jury said when presenting the award to “Visaaranai,” directed by Vetri Maaran. The Tamil-language film, which won an Amnesty Intl. award at Venice, was also applauded for its “complex and multilayered examination of systematic abuse of power.”
Sanjay Mishra of “Masaan” won the lead actor and the femme cast of “Parched” (Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Lehar Khan) won the actress award.
“Playground,” directed by Shamik Sen Gupta and Pallavi MD, took home the award for short “for its portrayal of two families in crisis, using a quiet economy and powerful yet subtle performances.” “Daaravtha” won the audience prize.
IFFLA closed out with a red carpet and gala fete that featured the North American premiere of Anu Menon’s feature “Waiting,” starring Kalki Koechlin.
This year’s festival featured more features and shorts from women filmmakers than any before, as well as many titles that had received top awards at festivals around the globe.
