Karen Gillan to Make Directorial Debut With ‘Tupperware Party’ Movie for Mt. Hollywood Films

“Doctor Who” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Karen Gillan is directing a “Tupperware Party” movie as the first title in a five-picture slate for the newly-launched Mt. Hollywood Films.

Gillan will travel to Scotland for the early-2017 production of “Tupperware Party,” her feature-length directing debut. She will direct from her own script.

The film is produced by Gillan’s producing partner Mali Elfman, with Tien Huei Grace Yeh and Claire Mundell. Executive producers are Mt. Hollywood Films’ R. Andru Davies, Albert Gersten and Sloan Martin. Post-production is set to take place in Georgia.

The company is touting its mission as producing high-quality, commercially viable projects while creating high-level opportunities for women and minorities in the entertainment industry. It is initially focused on the theatrical film market, with plans to broaden into television in mid-2017.

Mt. Hollywood Films is privately capitalized and plans to produce mid-budget projects in the $10-40 million range with each slate expected to complete production during a 12 to 18-month window. It plans to focus on genres such as action, horror and science fiction and each five-project slate will include one specialty-art film.

R. Andru Davies, president of Mt. Hollywood, said, “We believe this is a substantial opportunity to engage a very talented and underutilized pool of talent, collaborating on films they’re excited about making.”

Gillan starred as Nebula in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and as Amelia Pond in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” She is currently filming the Sony’s “Jumanji” opposite Dwayne Johnson and will be seen opposite Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in the sci-fi thriller “The Circle.”

“With Karen Gillan’s myriad talents as a writer-director and her rising international popularity, we are thrilled that ‘Tupperware Party’ will be Mt. Hollywood’s first project,” said Gersten.

The company is also planning a production start in early-2017 for the female-driven action film “Texas Rangers: Z-Unit,” following the last of the Texas Rangers who must invade a devastated Houston to arrest one of their own who has been conducting outlawed genetic experiments. Mitch Iverson, whose credits include the animated series “Voltron” is writing. The project will be executive produced by Davies, Gersten and Martin.

Davies has a background in commercials, music videos and live theater. Gersten is chairman of the board and president of real estate concern The Gersten Companies. Martin is a founding partner of Infinity Equity and formerly a partner with Atlanta-based Cardea Capital and Electronic Trading Group.
