‘Star Wars’ Regains Top Spot on Disc Sales Chart

Sony's 'The 5th Wave' debuts at No. 2

Walt Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” returned to the top spot on the NPD VideoScan sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, the week ended May 8.

It marks the third time in the five weeks since the sci-fi sequel arrived on shelves that it earned the top overall spot; “The Force Awakens” had been on top in the two weeks since its debut before ceding the next two weeks to 20th Century Fox’s “The Revenant,” which slipped to No. 3 in its third week.
“The Force Awakens” also held onto the top spot on VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart, which it has held for four of its five weeks of availability.

The top new release on both charts was Sony Pictures’ “The 5th Wave,” an alien invasion thriller based on a young adult novel. The film earned $34.9 million at the domestic box office.

Lionsgate’s “The Choice,” the latest romance drama based on a Nicholas Sparks story, debuted at No. 4 on both charts, followed at No. 5 by Fox’s “Joy,” a dramedy about inventor and businesswoman Joy Mangano, with Jennifer Lawrence in the title role.

In the wake of the death of pop star Prince, his 1984 film “Purple Rain” jumped to No. 9, after moving back onto the charts at No. 11 the previous week.

In terms of Blu-ray sales, the high-def format accounted for 83% of “The Force Awakens” sales for the week, and 89% of Revenant sales. Among the newcomers, Blu-ray represented 75% of “5th Wave” copies sold, 43% of “The Choice,” and 23% of “Joy,” according to VideoScan data.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “5th Wave” debuted at No. 1, with “The Choice” at No. 2. Universal Pictures’ “Sisters” dropped a slot to No. 3, with Warner’s “Point Break” remake slipping to No. 4 and Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home” rounding out the top five.
