Soda Pictures and Rai Com Team to Bring Italian Opera to U.K. (EXCLUSIVE)

LONDON — Brit indie distributor Soda Pictures has teamed with Rai Com, the sales arm of Italian pubcaster Rai, to distribute Italian opera in cinemas across the U.K.

As part of a three-year deal, Soda will release Italian operas from Rai’s second All’Opera program, a collection of operas selected and produced by the Italian outfit.

The upcoming season will offer Brit auds the chance to see performances such as Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde,” from Teatro dell’Opera in Rome on November 27. A range of musical epoch and composers will also feature throughout the season including Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, Verdi and the opening ballet of La Scala’s 2016-17 season, “Coppeila.”

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Rai Com to bring the original Italian opera experience to the U.K. and Ireland,” said Soda Pictures managing director Edward Fletcher. “Audiences have shown their love for live opera in cinema and we can now offer them some of the most captivating productions from unique venues such as the world-renowned “La Scala” in Milan.”

Fletcher negotiated the deal with Rai Com’s head of international sales Mattia Oddone.

Oddone added: “Adding the U.K. and Ireland to the territories in which audiences will see these masterworks of the opera is an important affirmation of the Italian contribution to a wider European culture that unites all of us.”
