Richard Gere is set to star in Jon Avnet’s (“Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Risky Business”) “Three Christs,” based on a biographical novel by Milton Rokeach.

Eric Nazarian and Avnet penned the adaptation, with Avnet set to direct. The story follows a doctor (played by Gere) who is treating three paranoid schizophrenic patients at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, each of whom believe they are Jesus Christ.

Avnet and Dr. Aaron Stern will produce under his Brooklyn Films banner alongside Highland Film Group’s Arianne Frasier, Delphine Perrier and Molly Hassell.

Highland Film Group is financing the project and will introduce it to international buyers in Cannes this week. CAA reps domestic rights.

Gere can next be seen in Oren Overman’s family drama “The Dinner,” alongside Steve Coogan, Chloe Sevigny, Rebecca Hall and Laura Linney. He is repped by WME. Avnet is repped by CAA.

Highland Film Group will also be in Cannes selling Vaugn Stein’s noir thriller “Terminal,” toplining Margo Robbie, Simon Pegg and Max Irons as well as Scott Mann’s thriller “Final Score.”
