After 15 years, six films and $915 million in worldwide ticket sales, the “Resident Evil” film franchise is coming to an end.
Milla Jovovich is hanging up her guns in the last installment, appropriately titled “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which bows next year. But she won’t leave without a fight, as shown in a just released teaser trailer.
In it, Jovovich’s heroine, Alice, returns to Raccoon City to confront the evil Umbrella Corp. — the company responsible for unleashing the virus that turned the human population into flesh-craving zombies. As with the other films in the action-horror franchise, “The Final Chapter” includes lots of stylized and gory action scenes, under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson, who helmed three previous “Resident Evil” films.
Check out the trailer below.
“Game of Thrones” fans will recognize Iain Glen as Umbrella Corp. mastermind Dr. Alexander Isaacs. Shawn Roberts reprises his role as the evil Albert Wesker. Fighting alongside Alice will be Ali Larter’s Claire, who appeared in “Resident Evil: Extinction” and “Resident Evil: Afterlife.” Another model turned actress, Ruby Rose, joins the team as Abigail.
There are other callbacks to the previous films as well: The Hive — an underground facility where the zombie outbreak began in the 2002 original film; the Red Queen — a holographic girl who alternates between friend and foe; and of course, the laser hallway — a booby trap responsible for many gruesome deaths. In the trailer, Alice avoids the lasers using acrobatic stunts that would make Olympic gymnasts jealous.
Sadly, Jovovich’s stunt double Olivia Jackson was severely injured during a motorcycle mishap, resulting in a crushed face, many broken bones, and a paralyzed arm that needed to be amputated. A second crew member, Ricardo Cornelius, was crushed to death on set by a Hummer.
“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” has a release date of January 27, 2017.
