Walt Disney-Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” overcame a ho-hum theatrical run to shoot to the top of the national home video sales charts its first week out on disc.
The film, with a domestic gross of just $122.3 million – a little more than one-third as much as its immediate predecessor, “Inside Out,” generated just six months earlier – debuted at No. 1 on both Nielsen VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart, which tracks Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales combined, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
“The Good Dinosaur” bumped MGM’s “Spectre,” the latest James Bond film, from the No. 1 spot it had held for two weeks. “Spectre,” distributed for the home market by 20th Century Fox, finished the week at No. 2, again on both charts, selling fewer than 11% as many copies as the Disney film during the week.
Warner’s “Black Mass,” which stars Johnny Depp as notorious Boston mobster Whitey Bulger, slipped to No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart after bowing at No. 2 the prior week.
Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart were two new releases, both from Universal Pictures, “Spotlight,” the docudrama about the sex scandal in the Boston Catholic Archdiocese that just picked up a Best Picture Oscar, debuted at No. 4, while the mystery thriller “Secret in Their Eyes,” which stars Nicole Kidman and earned just over $20 million in theaters, debuted at No. 5.

Two more new releases finished at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, on the overall disc sales chart: “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” the first episode in the Disney TV series, and the Lionsgate actioner “Extraction,” with Bruce Willis, which enjoyed a limited theatrical release.
According to Nielsen data, “The Good Dinosaur” generated 50% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, more than any other new release. By comparison, “Spotlight” generated 48% of its unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, followed by “Secret in Their Eyes” (33%) and “Extraction” (29%). “Return of the Roar” was a DVD-only release.
Unlike the sales chart, Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week didn’t see a lot of changes, with the four top rentals remaining unchanged from the previous week: Warner’s “The Intern” at No. 1, 20th Century Fox’s “The Martian” at No. 2, Universal Pictures’ “Straight Outta Compton” at No. 3 and “Everest,” also from Universal, at No. 4.
“Extraction” debuted at No. 5.
