Missy Laney, former manager of Sundance Institute’s Artist Services Program, will be joining BitTorrent Inc. as the new director of creative initiatives.

Laney has worked with more than 250 filmmakers on crowdfunding campaigns totaling more than $13 million. She oversaw the first-ever creative funding initiative with Kickstarter, and managed digital and direct-to-fan distribution efforts

She also organized the Sundance Institute’s marketing efforts to maximize success through digital distribution with projects from Laura Poitras, Paul Thomas Anderson, Shane Carruth, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, Penny Lane and Tiffany Shlain.

Laney has presented salons, panels and workshops with the Sundance Film Festival, Knight Foundation, San Francisco Film Society, Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, Oaxaca Film Festival, IFP and SXSW.

Laney studied film at California’s Chapman University, where she was an award-winning producer with honors from Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, Provincetown International Film Festival and the Hamburg International Short Film Festival.

The technology company, best known for  file-sharing, launched an initiative in 2014 to distribute promotional material in “bundles” — a means to lure consumers into buying the full content on iTunes or other service. It teamed with Vice Media, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Moby and other filmmakers and musicians to launch promotional content bundles.
