‘Creed’ Debuts at Top of Disc Sales Charts

The latest “Rocky” movie topped the national home video sales charts its first week stores, bumping last week’s top seller, Walt Disney Studios’ “The Good Dinosaur,” to the No. 2 spot, also on both charts.

Creed,” a spinoff of MGM’s “Rocky franchise” in which Sly Stallone reprises his role as the title character (now a trainer, his fighting days long behind him), earned nearly $110 million in U.S. theaters and easily outsold the animated Disney movie, which in its second week of release sold about 66% as many copies as the Warner Bros. boxing movie.

Another new release, Sony Pictures’ “The Night Before,” a Seth Rogen comedy that grossed just over $43 million at the domestic box office, debuted at No. 3 on both the VideoScan overall disc and Blu-ray Disc sales charts for the week ended March 6.

MGM’s “Spectre,” the latest James Bond movie (distributed on home video by 20th Century Fox), slipped to No. 4 from No. 2 its fourth week on the charts, while the No. 5 spot, again on both charts, went to Universal Pictures’ “Spotlight,” the docudrama about the sex scandal in the Boston Catholic Archdiocese that just picked up a best picture Oscar. “Spotlight” had debuted the previous week at No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc-only chart.

According to VideoScan data “Creed” generated 44% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray, compared to 40% for “The Night Before.”

On Home Media magazine’s weekly rental chart, “The Night Before” debuted at No. 1 (Sony is one of three major studios that does not hold back new releases from top rental outlet Redbox for a month).

That pushed Warner’s “The Intern” and 20th Century Fox’s “The Martian” down a notch, to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Rounding out the top five on the rental chart for the week ended March 6 were “The Good Dinosaur” at No. 4 (up from No. 6) and, at No. 5, Lionsgate’s “Room,” a captivating drama about a kidnapped boy and his mother who spend years trapped in a tiny room and their struggle to readjust to the real world after they are rescued.
