In a pre-Toronto Film Festival move, “Daredevil” star Jon Bernthal and Christopher Abbott have boarded the indie thriller “Sweet Virginia.”

Imogen Poots, Rosemarie Dewitt, and Odessa Young are also starring. Jamie Dagg is directing from a 2012 Black List script written by brothers Ben and Paul China. Filming begins on Aug. 27.

XYZ Films is handling international sales at the Toronto Film Festivalm while WME Global is repping North American sales.

Bernthal plays a former rodeo star who unknowingly starts a rapport with a young man — portrayed by Abbott — who is responsible for all of the violence that has suddenly gripped his small town.

Producers are Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Automatik, Chris Ferguson for Oddfellows Entertainment, and Fernando Loureiro and Roberto Vasconcellos for Exhibit. Executive producers are Rian Cahill and Jesse Savath, with XYZ Films also executive producing and Exhibit financing.

Bernthal starred in AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and will be seen in Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant.” Abbott’s credits include “James White,” “A Most Violent Year,” and “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.” The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
