Japan Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Dethroned by Local Romantic Drama ‘Evergreen Love’

TOKYO — After reigning for four straight weeks as No. 1 at the Japanese box office, Disney’s “Zootopia” was finally dethroned by Shochiku’s “Evergreen Love” for the June 4-5 weekend.

“Evergreen Love” earned $3.2 million from 264,270 admissions in its opening frame. The romantic drama based on Hiro Arikawa’s bestseller follows a struggling office worker (Mitsuki Takahata) who falls for a mysterious guy (Takanori Iwata) she finds collapsed in front of her apartment building. The film was boosted by the fans of Takahata, who starred in a hit NHK morning drama, and Iwata, a member of the J-pop powerhouses Exile and Sandaime J Soul Brothers. The film is expected to approach the $20 million mark by the end of its run.

20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool,” another newcomer to the top 10, grabbed third. Opening on 724 screens nationwide, the film recorded $3.58 million on 248,473 admissions. Since Japanese box office standings are decided by admissions, not earnings, “Evergreen Love” topped “Deadpool,” despite raking in less yen. The film looks likely to finish north of $20 million.

Romantic comedy “The Kodai Family,” yet another first-timer to the top 10, ranked in at fifth place. Released on 308 screens by Toho, this film about the telepathic scion (Tatsumi Saito) of a blue-blooded clan who proposes marriage to a perpetually daydreaming office girl (Haruka Ayase) took $933,600 from 75,946 admissions. It had its world premiere at the Udine Far East Film Festival in April, with star Saito in attendance.
