‘Hateful Eight’ Tops ‘Point Break,’ ‘Concussion’ on Disc Sales Charts

Latest 'Hunger Games' flick slips to No. 2 its second week in stores

The Oscar-winning “The Hateful Eight,” released on disc by Anchor Bay Entertainment, snatched the top spot on the national home video sales charts from Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” the week ended April 3.

The Western mystery, helmed by Quentin Tarantino and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern, earned less than $55 million in U.S. theaters, to nearly $282 million for the fourth “Hunger Games” film, which slipped to No. 2 on VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

The Hateful Eight” won an Academy Award for original score. Jennifer Jason Leigh was nominated for supporting actress. The film also earned a nod for cinematography.

Two other new releases bowed in the top five. Sony Pictures’ “Concussion,” the controversial biodrama about football players developing brain damage due to repeated concussions, debuted at No. 3 on the overall disc chart (and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart) after earning $34.5 million in theaters. And Warner’s “Point Break,” a remake of the 1991 crime drama that earned a disappointing $28.9 million at the box office, debuted at No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart (and No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart).

Finishing the week at No. 4 on both sales charts was Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home,” the Will Ferrell comedy – with a domestic box office take of more than $150 million – that debuted at No. 2 the prior week.

According to VideoScan research, “The Hateful Eight” generated 55% of its total unit sales from the Blu-ray format, compared to just 34% for “Concussion” and 41% for “Point Break.”

On Home Media magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Daddy’s Home” remains at No. 1 the week after it debuted in the position, while the No. 2 spot went to Warner’s “Creed,” which just hit Redbox kiosks after a 28-day holdback.

“The Hateful Eight” debuted at No. 3.

“Mockingjay – Part 2” slipped to No. 4 from No. 2 the previous week, while the No. 5 spot went to “Concussion,” another new release.
