Gareth Evans, director of “The Raid” franchise, has found his next project in the period thriller “Apostle.”

Evans is writing and directing the film with XYZ Films, Severn Screen and Evans’ One More One Productions producing. XYZ will handle international sales at this week’s AFM market in Santa Monica.

The story follows a man who travels to a remote island and attempts to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a religious cult. The group demands a ransom for the sister’s return, undermining the man’s resolve to rescue her.

The film is aiming to start production in March 2017.

XYZ and Evans worked together on his break-out hit “The Raid,” which screened at festivals and raised Evans’ profile. Though he had opportunities to direct major tentpoles including Fox’s “Gambit” starring Channing Tatum, Evans has stuck to his own material including a sequel to “The Raid” which premiered at Sundance in 2014.

XYZ will also handle sales of Baltasar Kormakur’s “The Oath.”

Evans is repped by WME and Management 360.
