‘Fantastic Beasts’ Hits $23.5 Million in Two Days at International Box Office

Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” has grossed an impressive $23.5 million at 47 international markets in its first two days of release.

The Harry Potter spinoff, starring Eddie Redmayne, generated $6.9 million in nine markets on Wednesday, the added $16.6 million in 38 markets on Thursday.

South Korea is the biggest territory so far with $3.5 million in two days with a 68% share of the top five, followed by France with a two-day total of $2.4 million. Australia took in $2.1 million in its first day Thursday with an 81% share followed by Russia’s $1.7 million and a 77% share.

“Fantastic Beasts” opened in Germany with $1 million on Thursday, matching the $1 million from Wednesday’s sneak previews. Brazil generated $1.3 million on Thursday for an 84% share followed by Italy with $915,000.

“Fantastic Beasts” will open in another 16 markets Friday, including Spain, the U.K. and Mexico. Recent forecasts have projected that the franchise starter will finish the weekend with $200 million worldwide — including $75 million in the U.S., where Thursday night preview showings generated $8.8 million.

“Fantastic Beasts,” written by Potter author J.K. Rowling, cost $180 million to make. It follows Redmayne’s Newt Scamander as he tries to retrieve magical creatures that have escaped from his valise and are running wild through 1926 New York City.
